Many of these pets are adoptable and made available to the public, and thousands have found forever homes through BARC’s adoption program. Looking to adopt a new BFF? You've come to the right place!

Adoptions are done on a first come, first served basis. We recommend visiting the shelter as soon as possible as animals are often adopted quickly! Please note that we are not able to place adoption holds for pets.
visit our shelter
line1":"3300 Carr","line2":null
To adopt, you must be 18 years of age and you will need a state-issued photo id with current address. If the address on your id does not match your current address, please bring a utility bill with current address. You will complete an application here at the shelter, and as part of the application, you will need to show proof of homeownership or provide your landlord’s contact information, as well as proof of paid pet deposit or that payment arrangements have been made. In most cases, home ownership can be verified online. Please check the pet policies at your residence, including any breed or size restrictions, prior to visiting the shelter. You should have permission for the pet from all adults in the household. Your application will be reviewed to ensure that you can provide a loving home with the proper environment and care needed for the pet you have selected. Be prepared to spend some time at the shelter--pet ownership is a lifelong responsibility so we want you to spend time getting to know the animals, and we want to help you to make a choice that is a good fit for you!

If you’ve found a pet online or wish to come in person to view our dogs and cats, the BARC shelter is located at 3200 Carr Street, Houston, Texas 77026. We also have offsite adoptions. Animals that are already spayed/neutered are able to go home the day of the adoption. Otherwise, they are scheduled for surgery the next available weekday and the adopter may pick up their new pet that same afternoon. BARC supplies cardboard enclosures for transporting cats and leashes for adopted dogs.

Because BARC cares first and foremost about the safety and well being of our animals, people who want to adopt must complete an adoption application and agree to an interview with BARC respresentative. BARC encourages responsible pet ownership; we only adopt out animals to people who are qualified to meet the needs of bringing a new pet into their lives.

BARC only allows adoption of companion animals. Companion animals are just that, companions...they are adopted as pets and for no other reason. BARC uses criteria based on the animal’s behavior and health to determine whether an animal is fit to be a companion. This decision is solely in the discretion of BARC. BARC’s decision in this matter is final in all cases.

Animals that arrive at BARC may not be immediately available for adoption. We set a specific timeframe that gives us sufficient time to assess the animal’s health and behavior, as well as to allow owners a chance to claim their lost pets. Once that time frame has passed, the animal will become eligible for adoption. Animals that are too immature or not healthy enough for spay/neuter surgery are not available for adoption but may be available to be fostered. Please check with the shelter for our foster requirements.

Take one of our pets home and receive the gift of the unconditional love. Our standard adoption fees are as follows:

•Dogs - $50
•Puppies (4 months and under) - $75
•Cats - $20
•Kittens (4 months and under) - $35
•PurrFurred Pets (animals that have been at the shelter 20 days or longer) - $20 for cats/dogs
•Veterans’ Companion Program – Half off the full adoption fee for all dogs/$20 for all cats for Active Military & Veterans with proof of service
•Seniors for Seniors – Animals 2+ years old are FREE to qualified adopters over 60 years old (City of Houston residents must pay $5 for city license)

With your new pet you will also receive:

Spay/Neuter Surgery
Microchip with lifetime registration
Initial Vaccinations
Rabies Vaccine
City License (if within Houston city limits)
Enrollment in AKC Canine Good Citizen Obedience School
and more!
Houston, Katy, Woodlands, Conroe, Beaumont, Galveston, Pasadena, Sugarland, Harris County, Pearland, Spring
2009-03-25 15:26:55.640664
Open Tuesday-Sunday 12pm-5pm
(Closed Monday)
Please allow at least 1 hour to meet animals and complete the adoption process.
BARC is at 3300 Carr Street off of 59 near the north loop.
MAP: http://www.houstontx.gov/barc/map.html
You can mail donations directly to BARC at 2700 Evella Street, Houston, TX 77026 or drop donation off in person at the Customer Service Desk at BARC, 2700 Evella Street.

BARC thanks you for your donations and your support!
["cats","dogs
Animal Justice League (AJL) is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt dog and cat rescue organization with a focus on the Oak Forest and Garden Oaks neighborhoods of Houston, TX. My boxer's name is kivo he is 3 years old. We have had kivo since he was two months old. Unfortunately, we have to get rid of him since we're going to be moving to california and cannot bring him with us. We are sad to get rid of kivo, but it's necessary, Since we recently had someone passed away in our family. Keyboard is really good with kids. He loves to play, he is never really been around other dogs or is not trained.

Story

Hi! This is Dug! He is about 1.5 years old. He is named after the dog from the movie “UP”! Dug is the sweetest dog in the whole wide world and is extremely tolerant, he would be amazing with kids! He lets you pick him up, touch his ears, touch his paws, and he plays fairly gently and knows when to stop. He is also amazing on a leash, there’s always slack and he stops when you stop. Dug was recently adopted from the Montgomery County Animal Shelter about a month or so ago. Unfortunately, our dog we had before Dug likes to pick fights and they just don’t get along☹️. For the most part, Dug is very dog friendly and has never gone after a dog, but if one goes after him he does fight back. Dug is currently working on being hose trained and has done a very good job so far! He can be very stubborn about getting out of bed and needs to be dragged out sometimes. He’s very very smart and sweet boy and I think with proper training would be the most well behaved dog I’ve ever seen! Come see Dug!!!

Story

Lovey - Boxer mix - Female - 9 months - www.twyla.orgIf you'd like to know more about this dog please visit our website at www.Twyla.orgMeet Lovey: This GORGEOUS and sweet Boxer mix girl is about 9 months old and full of energy. She is very smart and learns quickly, food motivation certainly helps. She is crate and housetrained, leash training is in progress. She loves to play with balls and is getting a hang of the return-to-sender part for continuous play. She is great with other big dogs, loves to play and chase and tends to be vocal when doing so. Playing with little dogs needs a little help as she can be a little overwhelming for them. As she is still a pup, she comes with "puppy emotions" - she's a bit dramatic at times, still learning and mouthing and gets her feelings hurt when corrected and redirected. She also recovers really quickly. She also knows how to enjoy calm time and is an expert cuddler. She is good with teens - all of her puppy energy is barely contained when she gets excited and she gets the zoomies and will likely jump and run, so older kids that understand and can navigate her learning process are best suited for her.Lovey is looking for a home with another dog for her to play with, older kids are ok. She can manage a regular work day as long as she gets plenty of exercise, training and attention around working hours - she needs someone who is willing, able and excited to harness her puppy energy and molds it into a well rounded member of the family.***Please note: All dogs are fostered in private homes of volunteers, so to meet a dog please fill out an Adoption Application on our website (http://www.twyla.org/adopt/our-adoption-process) so we may setup a private meetup with the dog or coordinate for an Introduction at the next general Adoption Meet and Greet (as listed on our website: (http://www.twyla.org/upcoming-events), as not all dogs attend all Meet and Greets***

Story

**This dog is with Corridor Rescue in Houston, Texas**Hi, I'm Kolt! They say I am a mountain cur mix, about 50 lbs and 1 year old. I am a shy boy but with patience and time I will be in your lap giving you kisses in no time. My favorite things to do is snuggle up with my people or go play ball...oh I can't forget I love car rides especially if you let me stick my head out the window! I am still learning that the world isn't as scary as it seems but certain things still make me nervous, like loud noises from cars when walking by, large crowds of people, trash cans..but I am willing to learn that those things are not that scary, will you be willing to teach me? I also have some basic commands that I can do like...sit, shake, down, and my favorite high five..I would love to learn some more tricks..I am a very smart boy or so they say. I get told that I am not allowed to chase after cats..but they look so interesting that I just can't help myself, so it's probably best that there are no kitty's around at my new home. I enjoy having a buddy but I do prefer to take my time getting to know a new doggie friend. Will you be my new person to teach me the ropes? I am a very good boy, I promise...and I mean I am very handsome, just look at me!***Please apply to foster or adopt online at www.corridorrescue.orgDirect inquiries to: adopt@corridorrescue.orgThe adoption fee of $225 covers spay/neuter, microchip and current vaccines.Transport is available and can be discussed on an individual basis.Thank you for considering a rescued former street dog for your next family member!
